Father had just recently celebrated his 82nd birthday on April 5th. Born Francis Walter Sullivan in 1927 in Worcester, MA, he was the middle son of William Joseph Mullin and Eileen May Ritchford. His two brothers, William J Mullin of California and Robert E Mullin of New York City both survive him. He graduated high school in 1944 from the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Worcester, MA. He served in the U.S. Navy from June 1945 through December 1946 at the tail end of the Second World War. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1951 with an A.B. and from Boston University in 1959 with an M.Ed. He also held a teaching certificate in Special Education for the Deaf and the Blind. Father Mullin had a lifelong love of learning and took courses throughout his life in subjects as diverse as linguistics, anthropology, spoken French, communications and preaching. At the age of 37 in 1964, he entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Province of St Joseph in Somerset, OH and received the religious name Raymond. To his Dominican brothers throughout his life, he was known as Ray, or by his nickname, “Moon,” after the comic character Moon Mullins, even though Father didn’t have an “s” at the end of his last name! He was ordained a priest on May 27, 1971 at St Vincent Ferrer Church, New York City, by the Servant of God, Terence Cardinal Cooke, Archbishop of New York. In his many years in pastoral work, he served as Pastor in two parishes: St Peter’s in Memphis, TN and St Dominic’s in Detroit, MI. He also had parochial assignments in Hawthorne, Valhalla and New York, NY, as well as Columbus, OH. For eleven happy years, from 1991-2002, Fr Mullin served as Chaplain to the Dominican Monastery of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Lancaster, PA. He was greatly loved by both the Nuns and the lay people who came to know him. In 2002, Fr Mullin was assigned to Holy Innocents Parish, Pleasantville, NY, and from 2003-2005, he served as Chaplain at St Rose Home in lower Manhattan, run by the Hawthorne Dominican Sisters. 1n 2005, due to failing health, he took up residence at the Dominican Center for Assisted Living at St Dominic Priory in Washington, DC. He moved to Rosary Hill Home, Hawthorne, NY on April 6, 2009 and suffered a stroke on Good Friday, April 9th. He died peacefully on Easter Tuesday, April 14, 2009. On Monday, April 20, 2009, his body will be received by his Dominican community at Holy Innocents Church, Pleasantville, NY at 7 PM, and the Office of the Dead will be prayed at 7:30 PM in church. On Tuesday, April 21, 2009, a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Innocents at 11 AM, followed by burial in the Dominican Plot, All Souls Cemetery, Pleasantville.
