Doris Elise Krumlauf

Obituary: Doris Elise Krumlauf passed away on April 2, 2010 at her home at Kendal on Hudson in Sleepy Hollow.  Daughter of the late Elise Wangenstein, Bruce Krumlauf and Herman Frederick Krumlauf, Doris was born on April 14, 1928 and lived her life in Yonkers until the past several years.

Educated in Yonkers Public Schools, she graduated from Gorton High School in 1946.  In 1950, she graduated from Cortland SUNY with a B.S. degree in Physical Education.  She received her certification in Physical Therapy from Stanford University (Calif.) in 1952 and in 1960 she received her M.A. in Health Education from N.Y.U.

Her work experience was extensive.  She practiced physical therapy at N.Y.S. Rehab Hospital in Haverstraw and Mt. Vernon.  From 1962-1964 she worked for the U.N. with W.H.O. as a therapist and as a teacher of English.  Returning to the U.S., she worked for the Visiting Nurse Service of N.Y. and later as a Physical Therapy Supervisor in Westchester County as well as New York City.  In retirement, she was active in community groups and volunteered as a mentor for acculturation programs with Japanese students.

Throughout her life Doris traveled extensively and established a network of life-long friendships.  Her world travels gave opportunity to enhance her talent for photography which she shared with others through magnificent slide presentations.

As one of the early (2004) residents of Kendal, Doris used her organizational strengths, leadership qualities, personal attributes and unique style to help shape the direction, the vision, the culture that is Kendal.

Doris lived her life with a sense of harmony, with purpose, with energy and with humanistic concern for others.  It is best reflected by a quotation from Montaigne; “The conduct of our lives is the true mirror of our doctrine”.  Indeed, her “doctrine” was carried out with elegance and style.

Doris is predeceased by her brothers Frederick Joseph Bruce and Eugene William Bruce.  She is survived by loving nephew Eugene William Bruce and cousins Carl M. Groepler, Frederick Groepler, David Krumlauf and Lila Weinberg.

A memorial gathering will be held at Kendal on Hudson on April 17, 2010 between 1 and 3 P.M.
