Obituary:
It is with great sorrow that the Haravon family announces the death of Dr. Aristide “TD” Haravon, 83, of Pleasantville. The angels took him peacefully while surrounded by family and friends on November 28th, 2009.
Aristide was born on February 17th, 1926 in Bucharest, Romania to parents Iancu Haravon and Regine Mendelsohn. He grew up in Romania, enduring Nazi labor camps and anti-Semitic discrimination. After World War II, he obtained his medical degree from the Institute for Medicine & Pharmacology in Bucharest. Eventually, he immigrated to France as a refugee before settling in the United States in 1962. He completed a Clinical Fellowship in Cardiology at Montefiore Hospital, Bronx, NY and opened his medical practice in Pleasantville in 1966.
Aristide Haravon was Chief of Cardiology at Northern Westchester Hospital and an attending at Westchester County Medical Center. Medicine was truly his calling; he was known for his bedside manner, particularly in life and death situations. In 1971, he established Northern Westchester Hospital’s first Coronary Care Unit, which still thrives today.
Dr. Haravon also had a gift for teaching and public speaking. He instructed interns, residents and nurses at both hospitals, and was known for his ability to convey complex information clearly and practically. His public speaking skills translated to the gift of story-telling; he captivated his daughters and, later, his grandchildren, with whimsical tales at bedtime.
TD was happiest in the sun, either skiing, playing tennis, swimming in the ocean or sipping a cold drink with friends. He had a marvelous singing voice and would accompany himself on the piano at parties. Aristide recently became a Life Master in the American Contract Bridge League and was a frequent player at the Bridge Deck in Scarsdale.
Aristide is survived his wife of 45 years Alda Haravon, his daughters, Anita Haravon of Manhattan and Leslea Haravon Collins (Steve) of Iowa City, and his grandchildren Serena, Jeremiah, Ariel and Tobiah Haravon Collins, of Iowa City. Other surviving family members include: Eli Mendelsohn, Lidia Tzur, Marieta Susnoschi, Avner Tzur, Adina Shwartz and Lucian Gross. Aristide leaves behind his dearest childhood friend, Mitica Daniel of London.
He is preceded in death by his grandson, Jacob Haravon Collins.
A memorial service will be held at Beecher Funeral Home in Pleasantville, NY on Sunday, December 13th. Visitation 2pm. Memorial service 3pm.
