Obituary: George Edward Roberts, 94, a Pleasantville resident for over 47 years,
died August 13, 2009 after a long and fulfilling life. He was born
July 23, 1915 in New Jersey, the son of George E. Roberts and Theresa
Curran. Raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. he married Cecelia Ann Mahoney, a
Brooklyn native, on May 3, 1941. After serving in the Army Air Corps
Cavalry during World War II, he and Cecelia moved back to Brooklyn,
then to Hicksville, N.Y., Madison N.J. and finally to Pleasantville in
1961. He was employed by Esso, later Exxon from which he retired in
1980. He was in Product Marketing. He is survived by Cecelia Ann
Roberts, his wife of 68 years as well as six children: Karen Bucci
(Marshall) , Kevin Roberts (Dianne Ripley), Christine Natlo
(William), George Roberts, Jr., Cecelia Passabet (James), and Jeremiah
Roberts (Suzanne) He was predeceased by his third child, Kathleen.
Also surviving are his grandchildren: Marshall Bucci, Jr., Matthew
Bucci, Tara Ermark, William Natlo, Jr., Kevin Roberts, Jr., Jessica
Natlo, Sara Natlo, Brian Natlo, Mary Roberts, Douglas Roberts, James
Passabet, Trevor Roberts, Shane Roberts, and Kathleen Passabet. His
granddaughter, Elizabeth Roberts, predeceased him. Seven great
grandchildren also survive him.
An avid sports fan, Mr. Roberts was a semi pro baseball player in the
1940’s with the Flatbush Grays. He coached Little League and Babe
Ruth Baseball in the 1950’s and later was a well-respected umpire in
the WPUA. Annual trips to the Adirondacks were one of his great
loves, which included a season pass to the annual Thoroughbred racing
at Saratoga, part of his enduring admiration of horses. Genesee Beer
had a special place in his heart as well, which required regular trips
to upstate New York. He enjoyed Frank Sinatra, thrift, making his
own signs and a clean garage.
Visitation will be Sunday 2-4 & 7-9pm at Beecher Funeral Home, Inc., Pleasantville.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday 10am at Holy Innocents Church, Pleasantville.
Interment will follow at Middle Patent Rural Cemetery, Bedford, NY.
